COMPUTER ink jet PRINTERS- do they all fail after a year or so?

I have owned 2 Canon ink jet printers. I mostly use them for b&w printing but I print a page of color about once every 2 weeks. After a year, they seem to start printing funny colors and lines on images that I seemingly cant correct thru head alignment, head cleaning etc. Do all jet printers eventually do this? Is it planned absolescence? Can I resurrect my printer to specs?
